This four-story residence on a very tight downtown lot adjacent to the Amtrack railway is currently under construction. The top three stories are light-wood framed, bearing on a concrete block ground floor. The large wind area combined with narrow footprint and complex geometry, created many challenges in implementing a lateral force resisting system. We were able to do this primarily using light-guage steel, off-the-shelf fasteners and clips, to tie the building to the plywood shearwalls, thereby avoiding expensive steel frames.
